Boston Terriers
Boston Terriers
Boston Terrier puppies are one of the few breeds born with naturally “docked” tails. Some have barely discernible stubs while others may have tails an inch or two long but no Boston has to have its tail artificially and cruelly shortened. Likewise, their ears also stand up naturally beginning at about four months of age.
You may have heard Boston Terrier puppies referred to as Boston Bull Terriers, too. This recalls its distant ancestors, the English bulldog and the French terrier. From these two breeds came the “Boston Gentleman”, originally bred for pit fighting but thankfully its sweet nature made this breed more suited for companionship. They retain the incredible jaw strength of the bulldog, however, and only the toughest toys will survive more than a few games of tug of war!
Boston Terrier puppies are never whelped naturally due to the mother’s pelvis being too small for their large heads to pass through. All Boston Terrier puppies are delivered by C-section, a process that is painful and exhausting for the mother and quite expensive for the breeder. Expenses for stud fees, ovulation testing, veterinarian fees and surgery can exceed two thousand dollars! It’s little wonder that pedigree Boston Terrier puppies are quite costly, especially since there are rarely more than two or three in a litter. Given the difficulties both mother and pups must endure, one should think very long and carefully before breeding a Boston Terrier.
The American Kennel Club standard for Boston Terrier colors is black, brindle and seal, which is black with some brown hair visible. All other colors are not considered acceptable by the AKC and those Bostons cannot be shown professionally. However, there are other colors and markings that Boston Terrier puppies may be born with; this does not necessarily mean that they are defective but that a regressive gene has fought its way to the gene pool! Although red, liver, brown, blue, fawn or white are not up to standard these colors can be very attractive. The pup may also have yellow or blue eyes, also in violation of AKC standards.
A red Boston Terrier, also called liver, is a golden brown instead of brindle, black or seal. The puppy will often have golden eyes rather than the deep brown of “perfect” puppies and the combination is strikingly beautiful. A brindle Boston Terrier is acceptable according to the AKC, its black coat interspersed with brown hairs that form a very attractive pattern. Brindle is a highly sought color for Bostons.
You will rarely see a white Boston Terrier but rather mostly white with some splotching of black or red. Mostly white Boston Terrier puppies and dogs may not be up to breed standards but they are just as intelligent, playful and loving as any other puppy.
Boston Terrier puppies should always be purchased from a reputable breeder, not a “puppy mill”, or adopted from a rescue society. If you do decide to get a pup, you will find them easy to housetrain and an absolutely delightful addition to your household!

Boston Terrier Rescue
If you are thinking of adding a Boston terrier to your household you should consider Boston Terrier rescue. Unlike an animal shelter, Boston Terrier rescue is a network of dog lovers who foster displaced dogs until a home is found for them.
There are some misconceptions about Boston Terrier rescue that have been difficult to dispel. These wonderful, intelligent dogs are not homeless because they have behavior problems but usually because their owners can no longer care for them. They may come from a household that is so financially strained that even the expense of feeding an animal will endanger their own well being. Often, a Boston terrier is placed in rescue because their humans have died or a couple has divorced. None of it is the fault of the dog but still they suffer the consequences.
Boston Terrier adoption is a bit like the process for adopting a child. Depending on the Boston Terrier rescue in your area there are certain conditions that must be met before you can be considered as a prospective owner. Most rescue organizations will visit your home to be sure it is suitable for a Boston terrier; they will make sure that your home is clean and healthy and there is enough room for the dog to play. A fenced yard is a big plus but not a requirement. Your family will often be interviewed, too. This is for the protection of the dog, to insure that he or she will not have to return to foster care.
There is also a contract involved in most Boston Terrier adoption processes. By signing it you promise to never tie the dog outside, to feed and care for it properly and visit the veterinarian regularly. All Boston terriers in foster care have been spayed or neutered and given all necessary vaccinations. You know you are getting a healthy dog when you deal with Boston Terrier rescue. There may also be a nominal fee involved, both to insure that you truly want to adopt and to cover the foster home’s expenses during the dog’s stay.
Boston Terrier breeders sometimes use rescue organizations to humanely deal with less than perfect puppies. The process of “culling” or disposing of improperly marked puppies is, thankfully, rarely used these days and instead the pups are adopted out. Breeders cannot show Boston terriers that are improperly marked, too large or too small and use rescue societies to place these “rejects”. Such dogs often make the best of companions!
If you decide to deal with a Boston Terrier rescue organization, you will get a healthy dog that has been socialized with both humans of all ages and other dogs. He or she will be well-behaved, playful, energetic, intelligent and loving. You would be hard pressed to find a better companion than one you get from Boston Terrier rescue!
Boston Terrier Gifts
Anyone who owns Boston Terriers knows how special they are—energetic and curious with a heart capable of holding so much love you would think it would burst. A Boston Terrier is a special breed that not only sets itself apart by its physical characteristics but by the personality quirks in each and every pup and adult.
If you know someone with a Boston Terrier or you belong to one yourself, you know how hard it is to find Boston Terrier gifts. There are loads of keychains, knickknacks, coffee mugs and other things with dog themes but it seems that there are very few Boston Terriers gracing the market. However, if you look hard enough or find an internet interest group on Boston Terriers you’ll be able to indulge your love of all things Boston!
A Boston Terrier is a friend you never, ever forget. My first Boston Terrier was an eight year old rescue case when he found his way into my heart and my home. After his death five years later a friend gave me a ceramic Christmas ornament of a Boston Terrier with wings and a halo that has graced my tree every year since. Gifts such as that ornament remind us of beloved friends and bring smiles as well as wonderful memories.
Recently the country has been paying more attention to this wonderful, dignified breed that originated in Boston, Massachusetts. In 1870 Robert C. Hooper bought a dog he named Hooper’s Judge, a cross between an English Bulldog and a French Terrier. Judge was the first of the “Boston Gentleman” breed, which originally weighed an average of 40 pounds. Eventually these beautiful dogs were downsized to the point that they now weigh between 8-20 pounds although “throwbacks” can be as big as 30-40 pounds. Originally bred for fighting, these intelligent and vivacious dogs were quickly used instead for companionship.
Boston Terrier gifts are always welcomed by those that love these wonderful dogs. The breed’s popularity is once more beginning to increase as the country tires of Dalmatians, Labradors and spaniels. You can now see Boston Terriers on coffee mugs, plates and keychains as well as linens and other household items. Ceramic statues and ornaments are also becoming more common but at times it is difficult to find a life-like representation. The Boston Terrier breed has such an expressive, intelligent face that it takes real talent to translate it into an original piece of art.
If you know someone who belongs to a Boston Terrier you know what delight such a companion brings into their life. Boston Terrier gifts are inexpensive but the pleasure they bring every day is priceless. Your friend will think of you each time they use their coffee mug or other Boston Terrier gifts that you are thoughtful enough to give. Perhaps you would even like to give one of those gifts to yourself!
